How Long Does LASIK Last? Will My Vision Change Again?

One of the most common questions patients ask is whether LASIK is permanent. The short answer is yes - LASIK permanently reshapes the cornea to correct nearsightedness, astigmatism, and mild amounts of farsightedness. However, your eyes do continue to age. and that matters for long-term stability.

The Key Concept: LASIK Is Permanent, But Eyesight Naturally Changes with Advancing Age

LASIK corrects your prescription by permanently re-shaping the cornea, the front surface of the eye. The correction does not “wear off.” Once treated, the cornea does not revert to its original shape.

What can change over time is the rest of your visual system. Aging, and in particular lens changes, can affect how clearly you see years or decades later.

How Long Do LASIK Results Typically Last?

For most properly selected patients, LASIK can provide decades of stable distance vision. Large long-term studies show that the majority of patients remain highly satisfied 10-30+ years after surgery.

Small prescription shifts can occur, but significant regression is uncommon when:

  • Surgery is performed after vision has stabilized
  • Modern diagnostic work-ups/imaging is utilized
  • Treatment is appropriately recommended and personalized

Why Vision Can Change After LASIK

  1. Presbyopia (Reading Vision Changes)

Around age 45-50, nearly everyone develops presbyopia, the natural loss of near focusing ability. LASIK does not prevent this, because it occurs due to changes in the eye’s natural lens, not the cornea.

This is why many LASIK patients eventually need reading glasses, even if their distance vision remains excellent.

  1. Natural Prescription Drift

Some patients experience mild changes in nearsightedness, astigmatism, or farsightedness over many years. This is more likely if LASIK is performed at a younger age or before the prescription has fully stabilized.

  1. Eye Health Changes

Conditions such as cataracts later in life can affect vision regardless of prior LASIK. Importantly, LASIK does not increase the risk of cataracts (or accelerate their maturity/growth) or limit cataract surgery options.

Will I ever Need LASIK again?

Most patients do not. However, a small percentage may benefit from an enhancement procedure if a meaningful prescription change occurs. Enhancements are typically straightforward when sufficient cornea tissue remains and the eye is otherwise healthy (certain tests such as cornea thickness measurements and a corneal topography must be done to confirm this). Not all offices have these technologies or the expertise to interpret the results of this testing.

This is why long-term follow-up and enhancement polices matter when choosing a surgeon and practice.

Does LASIK Increase the Risk of Future Eye Problems?

No. When performed on appropriate candidates using modern screening, LASIK does not increase the risk of blindness, retinal disease, or other serious eye conditions. Comprehensive screenings and discussions of relevant risks must, however, be performed by an experienced surgeon who places safety as the top priority. Your surgeon should engage in a detailed discussion about risk, benefits, and alternatives of the procedure, Modern laser vision correction surgery must be paired with a carefully curated post-operative care process that includes a personalized eye and medication regimen. Be sure to choose a surgeon and practice that prioritizes this. And of course, routine annual eye care afterwards remains important, just as it would without LASIK.

How to maximize Long-Term LASIK Results

  • Wait until your prescription is stable (this can vary but usually occurs between 18-25)
  • Diagnose and treat dry eye before surgery (patients with aqueous tear deficiency (is this true?), uncontrolled anterior/posterior blepharitis/Meibomian Gland Dysfunction, or uncontrolled autoimmune disease must be told “No”)
  • Choose a practice that uses advanced diagnostics and insists on surgeon-led consultations and discussions
  • Follow post-operative care instructions carefully and communicate with the practice early on for any concerns or problematic symptoms…Be your OWN best advocate
  • Maintain regular annual eye exams

The Bottom Line

LASIK like other vision correction procedures (such as PRK and EVO ICL) is a permanent correction of your current prescription, not a guarantee that your eyes will never change. For the right patient, it delivers long-lasting freedom from contacts and glasses and an excellent return on investment to enhance quality of life.

If you are wondering whether LASIK or another laser or lens-based procedure makes sense for your age, prescription, and long-term vision goals, a comprehensive surgeon-led consultation can help you decide.
